West Florida Defeats Division I Opponent

The third ranked in Division II, West Florida (3-1), earned the third victory of the season by defeating 4-3 Division I opponent Southeastern Louisiana (9-1) on Sunday. Recovering from a loss in the season opener, the Argos snapped the Lions nine match win streak.

Playing under the Division I rules, in which only one point is awarded to the team that wins the doubles clash, and the first team to reach four points is declared the winner, the Argonauts did not have much trouble to sweep the doubles action and earn the single point. In the first doubles position, Carlos Zamora (freshman/Copenhagen, Denmark) and Eduardo Cavasotti (senior/Florianopolis, Brazil) defeated the Lions Matthieu Leboucher and Ondrej Krivka 8-5. In the second doubles spot, Nicolas Barrientos (senior/Cali, Colombia) and Patrick Bateman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) dropped only two games to defeat the duo formed by Lions Julien Roussel and Alexis Biarneix . Luiz Bernardi (senior/Campinas, Brazil) and Jose Ycaza (junior/ Guayaquil, Ecuador) defeated the team formed by Lions Vladimir Paunic and Jakub Kwasniewicz 8-6. After the doubles play, the Argonauts got a 1-0 lead.

In the singles action both teams split three matches each. Playing in the first position, Division II 23rd ranked Cavasotti defeated Leboucher in three sets, 5-7, 7-6(10-8), 10-5. The Argos fell in the next three spots with Division II 17th ranked Barrientos being defeated 6-1, 6-4 in the second spot, Bernardi falling short 6-3, 6-3 in the third spot, and Ycaza falling 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth spot. The Argonauts bounced back in the last two singles positions, in which Zamora rolled over Lions fifth player Alexis Biarneix with a 6-1, 6-3 win, and Bateman defeated Lions sixth player Jakub Kwasniewicz with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

The Argonauts earned the third win of the season and improved its record to 3-1. The Argonauts will return to action next Friday, February 29, 2008, when they return to Division II action and face 13th ranked Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. at 10:00a.m. This will be the first of three matches played on a four-day road trip to the Orlando area. The Argonauts later face Florida Tech and Barry.
