West Florida Defeats 13th Ranked Florida Southern 6-3

Lakeland, Fla. The third ranked in Division II West Florida (4-1) earned its fourth victory of the season by defeating 13th ranked Florida Southern (3-2) on Friday. The Argonauts did not earn a single point in the doubles action; however, they blanked the Mocs in the singles play.

The Argonauts came close in the doubles play, but was not able to earn any point. In the first doubles position, Luis Arboleda (junior/Medellin, Colombia) and Eduardo Cavasotti (senior/Florianopolis, Brazil) fell 8-6 to the Mocs. In the second doubles spot, Nicolas Barrientos (senior/Cali, Colombia) and Patrick Bateman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) also dropped their match to the Mocs at 8-6. Luiz Bernardi (senior/Campinas, Brazil) and Jose Ycaza (junior/ Guayaquil, Ecuador) got only three games off the Mocs and were defeated 8-3. After the doubles play, the Mocs the 3-0 lead.

In the singles action, the Argonauts turned the table, and won every single match. Playing in the first position, Division II 23rd ranked Cavasotti defeated 11th ranked Micheal Knoedler after a retirement of the match when the score was 7-5, 6-6 (3-3). 17th ranked, Barrientos did not have trouble to defeat Moc Roman Schrimaier 6-0, 6-3 in the second position. Bernardi defeated Moc Guenther Fercher 6-4, 6-0, to tie the match at 3-3. In the fourth position, Carlos Zamora rolled over Moc Alex Thesleff with a 6-3, 6-2 score. In the fifth spot, Ycaza also defeated his opponent without dropping a single game in a set, when he beat Justin Laflamme 6-2, 6-0. In the sixth spot Bateman rallied from a set down to beat Moc Ben Taylor 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and give the Argonauts the 6-3 win.

The Argonauts earned the fourth win of the season and improved its record to 4-1. The Argonauts will return to action Saturday, February 29, 2008, when they face 39th ranked Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. at 2 p.m. This will be the second of three matches played on a four-day road trip to the Orlando area.
