UWF Baseball on Short End of Pitching Dual, in 3-2 Loss to West Georgia
March 30, 2008
Carrollton, Ga. - The West Florida baseball team dropped their fifth straight game, and fell to 3-5 in conference play with a 3-2 loss at West Georgia. Both starting pitchers went the distance in the fastest nine inning game of the season for West Florida (2 hours and 4 minutes). The Argos are now 15-22 on the season, while West Georgia improved to 24-8. The game was the first game of a doubleheader, since yesterday's rain forced two games on Sunday.
West Florida's Nick Presley and West Georgia's Dave Sheffield were locked in a pitchers duel, and both pitchers were very efficient in going the distance. The score was tied at 1-1 until the Wolves scored two runs on a seventh inning home run by Andy Matos. The home run gave Presley a hard luck loss, as he struck out seven and walked only one batter. However, the Argos only managed five hits offensively, but still nearly rallied in the top of the ninth. Scott Beckwith led off with a double, and scored to make the score 3-2, but Sheffield finished his complete game victory by not allowing any other baserunners.
In addition to Beckwith's double, the Argos just managed four other hits, in which all were singles. Kyle Andrews, Greg Pron, Jimmy Boswell, and Jackson Woodard had the singles for the Argos, who couldn't put many hits together against Sheffield. The Argos would be trying to prevent the sweep in the final game of the series, which was taking place following this game.
West Florida will be returning home for a three game series with Stillman, at Pelican Park on Monday and Tuesday. The defending GSC champions will be back on the road at West Alabama next weekend for another three game conference series. All three games will be broadcast on Stretch Internet.
