PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s soccer team came out strong in the Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinal match to defeat Ouachita Baptist 4-1 and advance to Sunday’s Championship match. Three different Argos scored in the contest as the Argos outshot the Tigers 16-8 in the match.
The West Florida offense got off to a quick start as Paul Willoughby (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) netted the first goal just 18 seconds into the match. After kickoff the Argos stormed up field and fired off a pair of shots. Willoughby would collect a rebound from a save by Tiger’s keeper Neil Ozmun and put it inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.
Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) would add to the lead in the 11th minute with his seventh goal of the season. After a foul outside just outside the box, Munoz would bend one around the wall of defenders and into the back of the net to give the Argos a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers kept themselves in the match with a Tyler Humphrey goal midway through the first half to cut the lead in half heading into halftime.
After the break, the Argo’s offense kept the pressure on the Tigers. In the 59th minute Ben Woodland (Hialeah, Fla./American HS) put one in on a nice volley to the near post. With a 3-1 lead and time winding down, Munoz put the game out of reach with his second goal of the match in the 75th minute to put the Argos up 4-1.
With the win the Argos advance to Sunday afternoon’s GSC Championship match against Alabama-Huntsville. West Florida has took home the last three GSC Championships and are looking for their seventh overall. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is slated for 1:30pm CT at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola.
