No. 7 UWF Men's Tennis Outlasts No. 41 North Alabama 8-1

The Argonauts Take Down Their Third GSC Opponent of the Season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 7 West Florida men’s tennis team (5-6, 3-1 GSC) defeated Gulf South Conference foe No. 41 North Alabama (3-5, 0-1 GSC) at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex this Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 score to pick up its third win over a GSC opponent this year. The Argonauts were able to capture all three doubles matches and five out of six singles matches.

In doubles the Argos were too strong for the Lions. The No. 3 ranked pair formed by sophomore Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) and freshman Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Afonso) defeated Jan Miskos and Bruno Zuleta 8-6 in the top doubles match. Sophomore Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Augustine Catholic HS) beat Clint Johnson and Carlos Cardenas from North Alabama 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles, while Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala./Murphy HS) and Lukas Larsson (Ystad, Sweden/Osterportskolan) followed suit with an 8-5 win over TJ Drake and Mirko Sommerfeld in the No. 3 doubles.

With the 3-0 lead the Argonauts just needed a couple of wins in singles action to secure the team win. However, the Argonauts came out with five out of six victories.

At No. 1 singles No. 12 Ducros defeated Jan Miskos 6-4, 6-2, while No. 43 Pozhidaev dropped only two games in his 6-0, 6-2 win over Mirko Sommerfeld at No. 3 singles, giving the Argos the 5-0 lead. Lue defeated TJ Drake 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, followed by Gunnels who defeated Clint Johnson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. When the score was 7-0 for West Florida, North Alabama was able to score one point when Carlos Cardenas defeated Patrick Bateman 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Ferreira closed the match with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Bruno Zuleta at No. 2 singles.

West Florida earned an 8-1 win to improve to a 5-6 overall record and a 3-1 record against conference opponents. The No. 7 Argonauts will next face No. 11 Georgia College & State (8-4) on Thursday, March 25 at 2:00 pm at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex at UWF main campus in Pensacola, Fla.
