No. 7 UWF Men's Tennis Edges No. 27 Delta State 8-1

Argonauts Improve to 4-2 in the GSC

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 7 West Florida men’s tennis team (7-7, 4-2 GSC) faced Delta State (1-7, 0-2 GSC) this Sunday morning at home and came out with an 8-1 win to pick up its seventh win of the season and their fourth win over a Gulf South Conference opponent this year. The Argonauts clinched two wins in doubles and victories in all six singles to bounce back from a loss to fellow GSC rival Valdosta State the previous day.

In doubles the Argos captured wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. The No. 3 ranked pair formed by sophomore Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) and freshman Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Afonso) defeated Julien Maurin and Christian Serrano Garcia from DSU 8-6 in the top doubles match, while sophomore Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala./Murphy HS) and junior Patrick Bateman (Apopka, Fla./Seminole CC) only dropped a game in their 8-1 win over Guilherme Russo and Marco Heinzleman in the third spot. The Statesmen responded with a win at the No. 2 spot as sophomore Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Augustine Catholic HS) fell 8-3 to Alexandre Waeters and Guillaume Waeters.

The Argonauts dominated the singles action, winning every single match in straight sets. At No. 1 singles No. 12 ranked Ducros defeated Julien Maurin 6-3, 7-5, while Ferreira beat Guillaume Waeters from DSU 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. No. 43 Pozhidaev defeated Alexandre Waeters 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Bateman defeated Christian Serrano Garcia 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Gunnels only dropped two games in his 6-0, 6-2 win over Guilherme Russo from DSU at No. 5 singles. Freshman Lukas Larsson (Ystad, Sweden/Osterportskolan) earned the final point for the Argonauts, as he also only dropped two games as well to defeat Brendan Keeling 6-1, 6-1.

With the 8-1 win the West Florida men’s tennis team improves to a 7-7 overall record and a 4-2 mark against GSC opponents. The No. 7 Argonauts will next face No. 27 BYU-Hawaii (12-1) on Monday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex at UWF main campus in Pensacola, Fla.
