MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 9 West Florida men’s tennis team (11-10, 3-1 GSC) fell 5-2 to No. 4 Ouachita Baptist (18-1, 3-0 GSC) in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Championships this Saturday afternoon at the Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. The Argonauts had the 2-1 lead over the Tigers and dropped four singles matches, allowing the Tigers to advance to the final match against Valdosta State for the third consecutive year.

In doubles the Argonauts jumped into the lead as the No. 5 pair sophomore Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) and freshman Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Afonso) defeated Jan Plewinski and JC Diame 8-5 at the top doubles match, while junior Patrick Bateman (Apopka, Fla./Seminole CC) and Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala./Murphy HS) defeated Pierre Tafelski and Daniel Moser 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. The Tigers responded with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles as Till Heilshorn and Thobias Kuhlmann from OBU defeated sophomores Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Augustine Catholic HS).

The Tigers picked up four singles wins in straight sets to come back and defeat the Argonauts. No. 19 Ferreira had to retire from the match with a back injury when the score was 6-4 down, giving No. 18 JC Diame from OBU the win at No. 2 singles. Nathan Rosenfeld (Miami, Fla./Miami International) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 win to No. 50 Pierre Tafelski at No. 4 singles, while Gunnels dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Thobias Kuhlmann at No. 5 singles. The Tigers earned the fifth point to advance to the final match as Daniel Moser from OBU defeated Bateman 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

With the loss the Argonauts dropped to an 11-10 overall record in 2010 and were eliminated from the GSC Championships.
