FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The No. 11 West Florida men’s golf team finished strong on Saturday, shooting a final round 276 to win the team title at The McLaughlin hosted by St. John’s at The Red Course at Bethpage.  The Argonauts stood out among a field of mostly Division I schools to win the team’s first tournament of the fall, as Princeton finished two strokes back at 840 and Villanova (845) and Sacred Heart (846) were third and fourth, respectively.

Junior Carlos Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia/Austin Peay) led the Argos to victory in the final round, shooting a 68 to finish tied for third overall (69-71-68-208).  Despite playing as an individual, sophomore Blake Olson (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic HS) also tied for third, finishing with a 67 in the final round (69-72-67-208).

The rest of the UWF lineup also had a strong final round, led by senior Otto Bonning (Skanor, Sweden/Sundsgymnasiet) who tied for seventh overall (69-72-68-209).  Junior Ryan Black (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) finished tied for 12th (73-66-71-210), and junior Thomas Guste-Pedersen (Helle, Norway/Frank Phillips) fired a final round 69 to finish tied for 17th (72-71-69-212).  Junior Tony Vizzini (Melbourne, Fla./Brevard CC) finished out the UWF lineup at 217, tied for 38th overall (74-71-72-217).

The Argonauts were the only team to finish under par at the par 70 course, finishing two under at 838.  Princeton finished even, and Villanova was five over and Sacred Heart six over.  UWF finished the day three under par on par threes and 15 over par on par fours, both of which led all schools in the tournament.  As a team, the Argos finished with a tournament-best 43 birdies, including 11 by Bonning.

UWF will finish out its northern swing at the Adams Cup of Newport hosted by Rhode Island at the Newport National Golf Club on Sept. 20-21.  After that tournament, the Argos will come home to host the Sandestin Collegiate Championship at the Raven Golf Club in Destin, Fla. on Sept. 27-28.  For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
