UWF Tennis Teams Announce Spring Schedules
Menís Season Starts, Feb. 11th; Womenís First Serve Set for Feb. 12th
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s tennis team will play 17 home matches while the women’s tennis team will play 16 home matches as part of their spring 2011 schedules, it was announced today by UWF Athletics. Overall, both teams will play 26 matches during the regular season.
The men will kick off the Spring 2011 season on Feb. 11th against Florida Southern at 1 pm. Florida Southern finished No. 7 in the nation in the final spring 2010 Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings. The women will open their season a day later as both teams take on Florida Tech at 9 a.m. and Stillman at 1 p.m. All home matches will be played at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus.
The men and women will spend the second half of February on the road. UWF will face some of its strongest competition of the spring in back-to-back weekend trips to Valdosta, Ga. Both teams will face Lynn on Feb. 18th and Rollins on Feb. 19th. The Lynn women finished last season ranked No. 4 in the country, while the men finished ranked No. 5. The Rollins men finished the season ranked No. 6 nationally. The following weekend, the Argo men and women will face Armstrong Atlantic on Feb. 25th, Barry on the 26th and face host school and GSC-foe Valdosta State on Feb. 27th. The Armstrong Atlantic women’s team is the defending national champions, while the men finished the 2009-2010 season as the No. 3 ranked team in the country. The Barry men are the defending national champions, and the women finished last season ranked No. 3. The Valdosta State women won the 2010 GSC tournament and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation. The men finished the season ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Both teams will spend the majority of the month of March playing at home. The home portion of the month of March is highlighted by the West Florida Classic, being held March 11th and 12th. The men will face Ouachita Baptist on March 11th while the women will face Central Oklahoma. On March 12th, both teams will face Alabama-Huntsville and Cameron. Alabama-Huntsville is the second GSC school the Argonauts will face this season. The Argonauts will face their other GSC East Division opponent on March 29th as they face North Alabama.
Both teams will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., March 14th-16th. The men will play Hawaii Pacific, Fresno State and Abilene Christian during their time in Las Vegas. The women will face Hawaii Pacific, Cal State Stanislaus, Fresno Pacific and Abilene Christian during their stint in Nevada.
West Florida will conclude regular season play at home, April 9th and 10th. Both teams will face Lambuth at 9 a.m. on April 9th, with the women facing Florida Southern that afternoon. The Argonauts will host New Orleans on April 10th. The Gulf South Conference Championships are slated for April 16-17th in Montgomery, Ala.
The UWF men finished the 2010 season with a 12-11 record and a No. 8 national ranking. Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) received ITA All-American honors in singles and doubles, while Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) received the honor in doubles. Ferreira was also named the ITA National Rookie Player of the Year and the 2010 Gulf South Conference East Division Freshman of the Year. The men’s team advanced to the NCAA South Regional semifinals.
The UWF women finished the 2009-10 season with a 14-10 record, a second place finish in the GSC and a No. 6 national ranking. Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) received ITA All-American honors in singles, while Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario) and Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) received the honor in doubles.
