No. 5 UWF Men's Tennis Team Defeats No. 30 BYU-Hawaii, 6-3

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5 University of West Florida men’s tennis team (8-5, 1-1 GSC) recorded a 6-3 victory over No. 30 BYU-Hawaii (6-1) today at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus. UWF has won its last four matches.
While both schools are NCAA Division II participants, UWF competes in the South Region and BYU-Hawaii is in the West Region. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but due to thunderstorms in Pensacola, the match was postponed a day.
UWF won two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) defeated Rong Ma and Agnel Peter, 8-5. Argonauts Lukas Larsson (Ystad, Sweden) and Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario) defeated Taylor De Hoyas and Andy Xing, 8-2, at the No. 3 line. BYU-Hawaii recorded a victory at No. 2, where Diego Miranda and C.J. Adamson defeated Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela) and Jose Carlos Tolentino (Lima, Peru), 8-3.
West Florida won matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to take the 4-1 lead. At No. 5, Lue defeated Xing, 6-2, 6-2. Sano recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over De Hoyas. No. 15-ranked Ferreira dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to No. 18 Ma at No. 1. Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala.) secured the victory for UWF with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Adamson at the No. 4 position. Miranda tallied a victory for the Seasiders with a 1-6, 7-6, 10-5 victory over Tolentino at the No. 3 spot. In the final match to be completed, No. 20 Pozhidaev defeated Peter, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, at the No. 2 singles position.
UWF will play its next three matches at home. On Friday, the Argos will face No. 16 Ouachita Baptist, which competes in the GSC West, at noon. The following day, West Florida will wrap up its homestand with a doubleheader against No. 49 Alabama-Huntsville and No. 20 Cameron.
