No. 5 UWF Women's Tennis Team Defeats Alabama-Huntsville and No. 18 Cameron
UWF Stays Perfect in Gulf South Conference Play
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5 University of West Florida women’s tennis team (10-5, 4-0 GSC) recorded two victories today with a 9-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville and a 5-4 victory over No. 18 Cameron at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus in Pensacola.
MATCH ONE: No. 5 West Florida 9, Alabama-Huntsville 0
UWF defeated conference foe Alabama-Huntsville, 9-0, in the first match of the day. With the win, UWF moves to 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC). UAH fell to 1-3 in the GSC.
UWF won all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario) defeated Giannina Mulky and Amanda Sippel, 8-3. Argos Jacqueline March (Santa Rosa Beach) and Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded an 8-1 victory over Maria Lawton and Kasi McDonald at No. 2. At the No. 3 line, Hannah Durham (Hammond, La.) and Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Amanda Bevis and Alejandra Pacheco, 8-2.
UWF won all six singles matches in straight sets. Baines and Naomi Higa (Córdoba, Argentina) blanked their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, at the Nos. 2 and 4 singles positions, respectively. At No. 1, Brewster dropped just two games, defeating Mulky, 6-1, 6-1. Luiza Sonnervig recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lawton at the No. 3 position. Freshman Durham tallied a 6-3, 6-0 victory over McDonald at the No. 5 position. Playing only in singles, Argonaut Jessica Hsu (Pensacola) defeated Pacheco, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 line.
MATCH TWO: No. 5 West Florida 5, No. 18 Cameron 4
In match two of the day for the Argonauts, West Florida defeated No. 18 Cameron, 5-4. Cameron competes in the South Central Region, and West Florida is in the South Region.
UWF started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. UWF tallied 8-2 victories at the Nos. 1 and No. 2 positions. At the No. 3 line, Durham and Mariana Sonnervig fell, 3-8, to Antonia Moberg and Elvira Sholles.
Higa put UWF up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Florencia Tornero at No. 6. Mariana Sonnervig clinched the victory for the Argos as she blanked Antonia Moberg, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. In other matches, No. 27 Amanda Moberg defeated Brewster, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 at No. 1 and Julia Puckhaber defeated Luiza Sonnervig, 0-6, 7-5, 11-9, at No. 2 to secure two points for Cameron. Baines defeated Sara Londono, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3. Sholles defeated March at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4.
West Florida will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for four neutral site matches. On Mon., March 14th, UWF will face No. 7 Hawaii Pacific and No. 21 Cal State-Stanislaus. On Tuesday, UWF will face Fresno Pacific. On Wed., March 16th, the Argonauts will wrap up play with a match against No. 6 Abilene Christian.
