VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 8 University of West Florida men’s tennis team opened NCAA Division II South Regional play on a high note Tuesday, taking down No. 9 Rollins College, 5-1, to advance to Tuesday’s South Region title match. With the win, UWF improves to 21-9 this season.
The Argonauts started the match in the best way possible, winning all three doubles points from the Tars. Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev blasted Jeff Morris and Arturo Baravalle in the top flight, 8-2, while Domenico Sano and Sean Gunnels doubled up Jason Alabaster and Nick Rowlands in the second flight, 8-4.
Mike Lue and Jose Carlos Tolentino made it a clean sweep in the third flight with a 9-7 victory over Sebastian Hafner and David Yawalkar, paving the road to the second round for UWF.
Pozhidaev took care of Baravalle in second flight singles, 6-2, 6-1, to put the Argonauts on the brink of jubilation, but Rollins (17-9) countered with their lone win of the day, as Hafner edged Gunnels, 6-4, 6-4.
The Rollins point was but a minor speed bump on the way to the UWF win. Sano scored the decisive blow in the No. 5 spot, sweeping Alabaster, 7-6, 6-2, to end the day’s battle.
With the victory in hand, the three remaining matches were halted in progress.
The Argonauts will try to win a spot in the NCAA Division II National Tournament tomorrow, when they face the winner of the Valdosta State vs. Florida Southern match. Regardless of the opponent, first serve in Valdosta is scheduled for 10 am CT.
