PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men’s soccer team defeated Alabama-Huntsville 3-2 in the 89th minute in the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament. With the win the Argos secure their place in the GSC championship game and improve to 9-6-2 overall.

The Argos had to wait a week to rematch UAH after falling 1-0 last weekend on a controversial penalty kick. West Florida wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game in the 30th minute when Junior Prevalus (Boynton Beach, Fla./Culver Stockton (Atlantic Community HS) placed a rebounded shot that hit the cross bar from Jack Salafrio (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) into the back of the net. Two minutes later West Florida took a 2-0 lead when Sean Reynolds (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) headed a ball in the center of the box off, after rebounding his own shot, to Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) who scored on the open goal.

Alabama-Huntsville’s Ragnar Gunnarsson cut West Florida’s lead to one in the 44th minute when he scored on a penalty kick. UWF took the lead into the half 2-1 outshooting the Chargers 16-2.

In the second half Jarrod Muggleton netted the equalizer, 2-2, in the 62nd minute, heading a cross from the left sideline. Both teams battled back in forth for momentum throughout the second half. UWF caught a break when Brandon LeMier was issued a red card, forcing the Chargers to play with a man down for the final 22 minutes.

Both teams were poised for overtime then the Argos were awarded a corner kick with less than a minute left. After the cross came in Dillon Gallet (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) settled the ball to his feet and ripped a shot off the cross bar. Reynolds was there for West Florida to gather up the rebound redirecting the game winner into the back of the net on a diving header, securing the victory for UWF 3-2.

The Argos will take on No. 9 Christian Brothers in the GSC championship game at Brosnaham Park on Sunday November 6 at 1:30 p.m. You can follow all the action live and find information on all UWF Athletics at www.GoArgos.com.
