UWF Tennis Teams Announce Spring Schedules
Argonaut Women to Play 12 Home Matches; Men to Play 16 Teams Ranked in Preseason Poll
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 8 University of West Florida women’s tennis team will play 23 regular season matches, while the No. 7 UWF men’s team will play 26 matches in the spring. Both teams face strong competition, as the Argo women will play 11 teams that are currently listed in the preseason edition of the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Sixteen of the men’s opponents are currently in the top 25.
The Argonaut women, who are the regaining Gulf South Conference (GSC) champions, will open the season on Feb. 3rd at Florida Southern, which is ranked number 10 in the preseason rankings. UWF’s first home match will be Feb. 10th against Auburn Montgomery at 1 p.m. West Florida’s schedule includes 11 teams that are in the preseason top 25. This list includes defending national champions Barry, which UWF will travel to on March 19th. West Florida also will face Lynn, the top team in the preseason poll, on March 20th.
Twelve of UWF’s matches will be at home. West Florida plays nine straight home matches from March 23-April 7th. Included in that stint of matches are three matches against teams ranked in the preseason rankings: No. 16 Georgia College & State (3/27), No. 2 BYU-Hawaii (3/28) and No. 17 UC San Diego (3/31). The Argos will also face three GSC opponents during the stretch: Delta State (4/1) and Valdosta State and West Georgia (both on 4/7).
The Argonaut men, who finished the 2011 season with a 21-10 record and an appearance in the regional finals, open the season on Feb. 5th at New Orleans. UWF’s first home match will be Feb. 10th against Auburn Montgomery at 1 p.m. UWF is ranked number seven in the preseason rankings and will face 16 teams that are listed in the top 25. This includes Valdosta State, a GSC foe and the reigning national champions, on March 30th.
Fifteen of the UWF men’s tennis team’s matches will be at home. West Florida will play an 11-match home stand from March 23-April 7th. Included in this stretch are nine matches against teams ranked in the preseason top 25: No. 19 Drury (3/23), No. 15 Georgia College & State (3/27), No. 25 BYU-Hawaii (3/28), No. 1 Valdosta State (3/30), No. 4 Concordia (3/31), No. 10 UC San Diego (4/5), No. 21 Grand Canyon (4/6), No. 20 St. Edward’s (4/7) and No. 22 Hawaii Pacific (4/7).
Both UWF teams will compete in the GSC tournament, which will be held in Montgomery, Ala., April 21-22, 2012. The NCAA South Regionals will be played May 1st-3rd. The NCAA Championships will be played at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky., May 16-19, 2012.
