Argos Take Both Games Of Double Header Against Mocs

UWF on an Eight Game Winning Streak

LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 2 West Florida baseball team took both games of Saturday’s double header against No. 23 Florida Southern, 1-0 in game one and 12-2 in game two. With the win the Argonauts increase their winning streak to eight games and improve to 8-1 overall.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel from the start. Josh Tanski (Apopka, Fla./Pensacola State College (Lake Brantley) received the starting nod for UWF and was lights out hurling 7.1 scoreless innings on the hill allowing six hits while striking out five. Dan Husum (Panama City, Fla./Wallace State CC (Bay HS) came on in relief and picked up the win in 0.2 scoreless inning of work. Bobby Parker (Tallahassee, Fla./Alabama Southern CC (Lawton Chiles HS) continued his save streak picking up his fifth save in as many attempts.

Florida Southern started Jon Jones who tossed eight shutout innings allowing six hits while striking out five. Austin Jackson came on in relief and picked up the loss allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work.

The West Florida offense was led by Billy O'Connor (West Palm Beach, Fla./Broward College (Wellington & American Heritage HS) and JR Pryor (Pompano Beach, Fla./Broward College (Highlands Christian Academy). Both had 2-4 games but O’Connor belted the team’s first home run, a solo shot over the right field wall in the top of the ninth inning, to secure the win for UWF 1-0.

Game two was nothing like the first. The Argos scored six runs in the first inning on six hits. Richie Long (Carthage, Miss./East Central CC (Carthage HS) had a two RBI single up the middle, Garret Flynn (Davie, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) had a two RBI double off the right field wall and Blake Barber (LaGrange, Ga./Shelton State CC (Troup HS) had an RBI single to right field.

Florida Southern scored their only runs of the ball game on a two run homerun in the third inning my T.J. Kuban. West Florida answered back with another six run inning in the sixth. UWF had RBI hits by Barber, Dustin Saulmon (Panama City, Fla./Alabama Southern CC (A. Crawford Mosley HS), Eric Sauls (Tallahassee, Fla./Ole Miss (North Florida Christian HS), Max St. Hilaire (Largo, Fla./St. John's River State College (Largo HS) and a two RBI double by Long.

The Argonaut pitchers continued their success on the mound. Brian Ellington (Gainesville, Fla./Florida State College at Jacksonville (Oak Hall HS) picked up his second win of the season throwing 4.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits while fanning three batters. Drew Bryson (Cullman, Ala./Wallace State-Hanceville CC (Cullman HS) came on in relief and tossed 2.2 shutout innings. The Moc’s Jake Guengerrich picked up the loss allowing six runs on six hits in 0.2 innings of work.

West Florida was led offensively by Long and Barber. Long was 2-4 with a run and four RBI while Barber was 3-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
