UWF Men's Cross Country Races at the FSU Relays
Freshman Roman Kowalski Wins His 1500 Heat with Personal Best

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team raced in the 800 meters, 1500 meters and 5000 meters at the prestigious FSU Relays this weekend in Tallahassee. Racing against Division I competition, the Argos were led by Dominique Sykes and Roman Kowalski, who both doubled in the 800 meters and 1500 meter races. Kowalski won his 1500 meter heat and finished second in his 800 meter race.
Dominique Sykes (Orange Park) started the weekend for the men with a personal best of 4:02.09 for the 1500 meters. Roman Kowalski (Pensacola) followed by winning his section of the 1500 meters with his own personal best of 4:03.5 by pulling away in the final 200 meters. Cameron Dickerson of North Florida had the meets best time of 3:47.5 for all 1500 meter sections. Just prior to the start of the men’s 1500 meters, the meet was delayed for nearly two hours for a lightning delay. All athletes had to leave the track area, and then come back nearly two hours later to race.
Sykes raced again less than 24 hours later and turned in a 1:56.8 for the 800 meters, as one of the leaders in his section. Kowalski followed in the next section finishing second with a 1:59.0 performance. Kenny Jesensky, running unattached, was the overall top performer in the 800 meters with a 1:50.9 clocking.
In the 5000 meters race, freshmen Chris Roach (Ponte Verda) and Cody Haden (Navarre) raced in a strong field of 31 runners, in which 21 runners recorded a time of under 16 minutes. Luke Gunn, running unattached was the overall winner in 14:33. Meanwhile, Roach finished 16th overall, but second best of the Division II athletes with a 15:48 performance, just two seconds off his personal best on the track. Teammate Haden was just behind in 16:23, for 23rd best in the race.
The Argos will continue spring competition by racing in the UNF Invitational next weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. The events will be held on Friday and Saturday. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
