West Florida Honors Four Student Athletes

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida honored two student athletes at the UWF Honors Convocation and two student athletes at the 24th annual UWF Student Leadership Awards Banquet. The student athletes represent the West Florida men’s and women’s soccer and tennis teams.
The UWF Honors Convocation awards student athletes who demonstrate leadership, positive impact or excellent grades. To be eligible, student athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, completed a playing season in their respective sport and must have participated as an active member of a UWF varsity sport from the previous athletic season. The Award is given to the student athlete with the highest overall grade point average (GPA) as of the spring semester from the previous academic year. This year’s winners were Steven Hermosa (Orlando, Fla./Valencia CC (Trinity Preparatory School) of the UWF men’s soccer team and Jacqueline March (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla./South Walton HS) of the UWF women’s tennis team.
The Student-Athlete Leadership Award was established to honor student-athletes who have exemplified leadership throughout their collegiate career. The award recognizes one male student-athlete and one female student-athlete who demonstrate innovative, motivational leadership impacting their academic, athletic, and community environments. This year’s winners were Tori Fish (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire HS) of the UWF women’s soccer team and Sean Gunnels (Mobile, Ala./Murphy HS) of the UWF men’s tennis team. Gunnels was also awarded the Kenneth L.Curtis Award, which is granted to one UWF male student athlete for significant contributions, sustained leadership and service to campus life at UWF. Gunnels received a $500 scholarship to support his leadership development.
