No. 9 UWF Concludes Regular Season with 6-3 Victory Over New Orleans

UWF Becomes GSC Regular Season Champion with Perfect 8-0 Record

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 9-ranked University of West Florida women’s tennis team (18-6) concluded its regular season today with a 6-3 victory over the University of New Orleans. The Argos are the Gulf South Conference (GSC) regular season champions with a perfect 8-0 record. UNO, which is transitioning to NCAA Division II and is not eligible for the GSC championship, falls to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the GSC. UWF has won its last seven matches.

West Florida won all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, Sheila Smiley (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) teamed to defeat Marta Sans and Manuela Gomez, 8-4. Baines and Smiley are the No. 18-ranked doubles tandem in the nation. Sisters Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied an 8-6 victory over Fanny Benincasa and Juliet Labarthe at the No. 2 line. Argonauts Hannah Durham (Hammond, La.) and Fernanda Amaral (Curitiba, Brazil) defeated Kristina Martic and Sofija Karalic, 8-5, at No. 3.

UWF and UNO won three singles matches each. The Argos recorded victories at the Nos. 2, 3 and 6 positions. At No. 2, Mariana Sonnervig defeated Gomez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Luiza Sonnervig defeated Martic, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3. At the No. 6 spot, Durham defeated Karalic, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 1, Sans defeated UWF’s Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), 6-4, 6-4. Oliveira is ranked No. 29 nationally in singles. Labarthe defeated Smiley, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, at No. 4. At the No. 5 line, Benincasa needed a super tiebreaker to defeat Baines, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

West Florida will play in the quarterfinals of the GSC Tournament on Saturday, April 21st. UWF, which is the number one seed in the tournament, will play the number eight seeded team at 8:30 a.m. at Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
