Argos Split Pair of Extra Innings Contests With Tigers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida baseball team split Saturday’s double header with Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama. Both games were extra inning affairs with the Argonauts taking game one 3-2 and falling in game two 4-3. After the split, UWF is now 27-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
Game one was a traditional pitcher’s duel. Both starters worked into the ninth inning of the extra inning ball game. The Tigers struck first in the top of the third inning on a RBI base hit by Ladarrius Cole followed by a fielding error by Andrew Rodriguez (Key West, Fla./Miami Dade College (Key West HS) to put UWA on top 2-0. UWF cut into the Tigers lead in the bottom half of the inning taking advantage of back-to-back wild pitches to score Taye Larry (Panama City, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan (Mosley HS), 2-1.
West Florida tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI groundout by Bill O’Connor (West Palm Beach, Fla./Broward College (Wellington & American Heritage HS). In the bottom of the tenth inning Leo Lamarche (Miami, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan (Krop HS) and Garrett Flynn (Davie, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) ripped back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no one out. The next batter, Blake Barber (LaGrange, Ga./Shelton State CC (Troup HS), drove in the game winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field to give UWF the victory 3-2.
Josh Tanski (Apopka, Fla./Pensacola State College (Lake Brantley) got the start for UWF on the hill and threw a gem. The southpaw allowed one earned run on nine hits in 8.1 innings of work. Bobby Parker (Tallahassee, Fla./Alabama Southern CC (Lawton Chiles HS) came on in relief to toss 1.2 perfect innings grabbing his second win of the season. UWA’s Barry Meeks also threw well in his start allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine. The Tigers Matt Betts received the loss allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings of work.
In game two the Tigers wasted no time putting a run on the board in the first inning with a two out single by D.J. Turo. UWF answered back in the bottom half of the inning taking the lead, 2-1, on a throwing error by the third baseman and a RBI groundout by Josh Huggins (Bay Minette, Ala./Faulkner State CC (Baldwin County HS).
UWA regained the lead in the second, 3-2, scoring their first run of the inning on a RBI groundout by Tyler Richburg and the second on a UWF wild pitch. The Argos knotted the game at three in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI double by Max St. Hilaire (Largo, Fla./St. John's River State College (Largo HS). In the top of the eighth the Tigers broke the tie scoring the go ahead run on a RBI single up the middle by Turo. The Argos would go in order in the bottom half of the inning as UWA would hold on to take game two, 4-3.
Jake Stephens (Marietta, Ga./Northwest Florida State College (Lassiter HS) got the start on the mound for UWF and allowed three runs on five hits while fanning four. Parker would follow in relief and tally his first loss of the season surrendering one run on two hits in one inning. UWA’s Jeremy White picked up the win in relief tossing 2.2 shutout and hitless innings.
