MOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Florida women’s cross country team continued its spring racing season by competing in the 800, 1500 and 3000 meters at the University of South Alabama Invitational on Saturday in Mobile. The meet was held in strong wind conditions, which aided throwing events and sprints, but slowed the performances in the distance events. Ruth Ashley’s strong showing in the 3000 meters and Audrey Carson’s 800 meter race highlighted the day for West Florida.

In the 3000 meters race, sophomore Ruth Ashley (Altamonte Springs) ran a consistent race and placed third overall with an 11:21 race performance. Ashley passed the halfway mark in 5:41, and raced the second half in 5:40 for the solid race performance. UWF junior Sabrina Seignemartin (Navarre) was just behind with a time of 11:37 to finish fifth overall in race of 13 runners. South Alabama’s national qualifier Tori Lawson won the event in 10:53.9.

Five Argonauts raced in the 1500 meters, which had a large enough field for two sections. Sophomore Renea Porsch (Land O’Lakes) posted the best time for the Argonauts with a 5:07.8 race performance, which was just a half second off of her personal best. Meanwhile, junior Karyssa Tourelle-Fallon (Navarre) won her section with a 5:09.7 race time. The best time of the day for the 1500 meters belonged to Zahri Jackson of Xavier, who posted a 4:49.9 race time. Three other Argonauts posted 1500 meter times in the top 15 of the meet. Freshman Keyanna Dennis (Chicago, Ill.) raced to a 5:20.6 time, while freshman teammate Audrey Carson (Pace) just behind in 5:21.0. Junior Beatriz Labrada (Sandy Springs, Ga.) raced to a 5:29.4 time.

In the 800 meters, the third section was one of the more exciting races of the day, as Jade Meyers of Southern University raced out to a big lead, but UWF’s Carson nearly chased her down to finish within one second of Meyers with a 2:30.3 performance. Meyers captured the heat in 2:29.3, holding off Carson by just two strides at the tape. The top 800 race time of the day belonged to Lindsay Schwartz of South Alabama, who clocked at 2:22.7 race time. Tourelle-Fallon’s second event of the day to race in for UWF was the 800 meters. She would finish with a 2:35 performance in the 800 meters, which was fourth best in her section.

The Argonauts will finish the spring season by participating in the elite War Eagle invitational hosted by Auburn University next weekend. A recap of UWF’s participation in the invitational will be available on GoArgos.com. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
