No. 1-Seed UWF Advances to GSC Tournament Finals with 5-0 Victories Over CBU and UWA
UWF Aims for Back-to-Back Conference Tournament Titles Tomorrow Against Valdosta State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 9-ranked and No. 1-seeded UWF women’s tennis team (20-6) won two matches today to advance to the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Women’s Tennis Championships finals. UWF defeated No. 8-seed CBU, 5-0, and No. 4-seed UWA 5-0. UWF will look to become back-to-back GSC tournament champions tomorrow as the Argos face No. 2-seeded VSU.
MATCH ONE – QUARTERFINALS
No. 1-seed West Florida opened up the tournament with a 5-0 blanking of No. 8-seed Christian Brothers this morning. With the win, UWF advanced to the semifinals this afternoon and moved to 19-6 on the season. Christian Brothers fell to 0-9 on the season.
UWF won at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions and received an automatic victory at No. 3 doubles as CBU defaulted the match. At No. 1, the No. 18-ranked doubles tandem of Sheila Smiley (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) tallied an 8-0 victory over Lauren Harrett and Kristina Reyes. Argonauts Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) blanked Amanda Richardson and Jordan Tedford, 8-0, at No. 2.
Christian Brothers also defaulted at the No. 6 singles position, thus giving UWF the 4-0 lead. The Argos clinched the match when Baines recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Reyes at the No. 2 singles position. During the tournament, once a team has clinched the overall victory, all remaining matches are halted.
MATCH TWO – SEMIFINALS
West Florida faced No. 4-seeded West Alabama in the semifinals this afternoon. West Alabama defeated No. 5 Delta State this morning to advance to the semifinals. UWF defeated UWA, 8-1, on the road during the regular season.
West Florida swept doubles. At the No. 1 position, the No. 18-ranked duo of Baines and Smiley defeated Jill Furlong and Lisa Becker, 8-1. Mariana Sonnervig teamed with Luiza Sonnervig to defeat Angy Cuellar and Emily Gerding, 8-4, at No. 2. Argonauts Fernanda Amaral (Curitiba, Brazil) and Hannah Durham (Hammond, La.) tallied an 8-4 victory over Natalia Cardenas and Dasha Popova at No. 3.
UWF took a 3-0 lead into singles. West Florida won the first two singles matches to finish and won the match, 5-0. At the No. 3 singles line, Luiza Sonnervig dropped just one game in her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Furlong. Baines defeated Becker, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4.
West Florida will face No. 2-seed Valdosta State tomorrow morning in the GSC Tournament finals. In UWF’s final home match of the regular season, the Argos recorded a 6-3 victory over Valdosta State.
