UWF Men Race at War Eagle Invitational
Roman Kowalski Led the Argonauts with a Strong 1500 Meter Performance

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team competed in the final meet of their spring season this weekend at Auburn University. The War Eagle Invitational provided some of the toughest competition to compete against during the spring season. Freshman Roman Kowalski turned in the team’s best performance of the event. The evening’s races concluded just minutes before a heavy rainstorm hit the area.
Three Argonauts raced in the 1500 meters. Freshman Roman Kowalski (Pensacola) turned in the top UWF time in the event, with a 4:03.8 time. Junior Dominique Sykes (Orange Park), who was the pace setter through the halfway point, finished with a time of 4:10. Freshman Brandon Skeie (West Creek, N.J.) turned in a in a 4:17 performance.
The race was tightly packed, as the lead pack of 10 runners went through the 400 meters within 1.5 seconds of each other. Sykes would lead most of lap two, as the top six runners would go through the 800 meter mark within two seconds of each other. Kowalski took the lead on the back curve of the third lap to start the finishing kicks for the racers. Nathan Corder of Alabama would take the victory in the final 200 meters with a strong kick.
Freshman Cody Haden (Navarre) was the lone Argonaut in the 5000 meters. Haden ran with the lead pack thru the first mile in 5:00. He faded and finished with a time of 17:05, well off his season best of 16:00 set at the North Florida Invitational.
The War Eagle Invitation concluded the Argonauts’ spring season. The following are UWF’s top performances for the spring season. Sykes turned in the team’s best 800 meter and 1500 meter races during the season. Both occurred at the FSU Relays in Tallahassee, where Sykes raced to a 4:02.09 in the 1500 meters, followed by a 1:56.8 for the 800 meters. In the 3000 meters, freshman Kowalski had the team’s best performance with a 9:07 clocking at the South Alabama Invitational. Finally, the top 5000 meter time for the Argonauts this spring, was turned in at the Southern Miss Invitational, where freshman Chris Roach (Ponte Verda) raced to a victory in a 15:46 time.
