Argonaut Weekly: Week 31 Recap

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2-ranked UWF men’s tennis team won the GSC Championship for the ninth time this weekend as the Argos defeated No. 5 Valdosta State, 5-1, in the GSC Men’s Tennis finals. The No. 9-ranked UWF women’s tennis team (21-6) became back-to-back GSC Champions over the weekend as they defeated Valdosta State, 5-2, in the finals of the GSC Women’s Tennis Championships. The softball team finished out regular season play (32-22, 16-12) after sweeping West Alabama, losing two to Alabama-Huntsville, and splitting games with West Georgia. UWF baseball went 3-0 over the week taking down Spring Hill and West Georgia.

Baseball

Billy O'Connor (West Palm Beach, Fla./Broward) helped lead the UWF baseball team to a 3-0 week. O’Connor hit 5-7 at the plate in three games for a .714 batting average, including one double.  He also scored six runs and drove in four, drawing five walks and posting a .857 on-base percentage for the week. The junior was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week as well.

Men’s Tennis

Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Afonso) and the UWF men's tennis team won the GSC Tournament for the ninth time this past weekend, defeating Delta State and conference rival No. 5 Valdosta State.  Ferreira defeated Santiago Vidales of VSU, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 position to clinch the GSC Title.  Ferreira and doubles teammate and Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) defeated Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk of VSU, 8-6, at the No. 2 position.

Women’s Tennis

Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles to help UWF win back-to-back GSC Women’s Tennis Championships. Sonnervig helped UWF come from behind by defeating Maja Ehses, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles position.
