UWF Women's Tennis Receives No. 3 Seed in South Region of NCAA Championships
UWF Will Play No. 6-Seed Florida Southern on April 30th at Lynn

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9-ranked University of West Florida women’s tennis team (21-6) received the No. 3 seed in the South Region and will compete in NCAA South Regional #2 April 30th-May 1st; it was announced by the NCAA this evening. The Gulf South Champion Argos have advanced to the NCAA tournament every year since 1997.
No. 1-seed Barry will host South Regional #1 April 30th-May 1st. Barry will play No. 8-seed Tuskegee and No. 5-seed Saint Leo will face No. 4-seed Rollins on April 30th. The two winners will face off on May 1st. Barry is 22-0 this season and blanked the Argos, 9-0, on March 20th. Then No. 8-ranked UWF defeated then No. 10-ranked Rollins, 6-3, on March 21st. West Florida has not faced Saint Leo or Tuskegee this season.
No. 2-seed Lynn will host South Regional #2 April 30-May 1. Lynn will face No. 7-seed Florida Tech and No. 6-seed Florida Southern will play No. 3-seed West Florida on April 30th. The two winners will meet on May 1st. Then No. 8-ranked UWF fell at then No. 3-ranked Lynn, 2-7, on March 19th. Then No. 8-ranked UWF opened the season with a 7-2 victory over then No.-10 Florida Southern. The Argos have not faced Florida Tech this season. WEST FLORIDA
West Florida is 21-6 overall this season and is currently riding a 10-match winning streak. The Argos are ranked No. 9 nationally and are listed as the No. 3 team in the South Region. UWF went a perfect 8-0 in the Gulf South Conference during the regular season. This past weekend, the Argos became back-to-back GSC Champions as UWF won three matches at the GSC Women’s Tennis Championships. The Argos have won the GSC 12 times.
The Argos have advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year since 1997. UWF fell in the finals of the NCAA Championships to BYU Hawaii in 2007. West Florida has reached the semifinals of the tournament four other times.
UWF senior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is the No. 29-ranked singles player in the country and is 11th in the South Region. Argonauts Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Shelia Smiley (Richmond Hill, Ontario) are the No. 18-ranked doubles tandem in the nation. Baines and Smiley are 15-4 this season, with all matches being played at the No. 1 position.
The winners of the NCAA South Regionals #1 and #2 will advance to the NCAA Championships May 16-19th. The Championships will be held at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
