VALDOSTA, Ga. – The West Florida baseball team fell in a pair of games at Gulf South Conference rival Valdosta State on Saturday.  VSU picked up a 6-4 win in the first game, and the nightcap also went to the Blazers in a 2-0 win.  With the two losses, the Argonauts fell to 31-15 overall and 10-11 in conference play, while the Blazers improved to 26-16, 14-8.

GAME 1: Valdosta State 6, West Florida 4
Junior left-hander Josh Tanski (Apopka, Fla./Pensacola State) got the start for UWF, allowing five runs in four and one third innings.  Tanski was credited with the loss to drop to 4-4 on the season.  Jordan DeLorenzo (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Scott Laughlin (Tallahassee, FL/Tallahassee CC) pitched the final three and two thirds innings for UWF, allowing just one unearned run combined.  VSU starter Pete Whittingslow (5-4) picked up the win.

The Argos were limited to one run in the first eight innings, and the run came on an RBI single by Dustin Saulmon (Panama City, Fla./Alabama Southern CC) in the top of the third.  Down 6-1 in the ninth, the Argos started a rally with hits by Leo Lamarche (Miami, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan) and Taye Larry (Panama City, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan).  After a walk loaded the bases, the three runs came in on a hit-by-pitch, walk and fielding error.  VSU reliever Benjamin Weil was able to get out of the inning, striking out the next two batters to finish the game.

GAME 2: Valdosta State 2, West Florida 0
Junior right-hander Jake Stephens (Marietta, Ga./Northwest Florida State) put in a solid pitching performance for the Argos in game two, allowing two runs in his second complete game of the year.  Stephens (5-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on just three hits while striking out eight.  The two runs came in on one swing of a bat, a two-run home run by VSU’s Bryant Hayman in the fourth.

Nick Fogarty (2-0) pitched a seven-inning shutout for the Blazers, scattering six hits while striking out six and allowing one walk.  Three of the hits he allowed were to Lamarche, as the second baseman finished the day 5-7.

The Argos will look to prevent the series sweep in their regular season finale on Sunday, April 29 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.  A win over VSU on Sunday would even the team’s conference record at 11-11.  For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
