No. 2 UWF Wins NCAA South Regional #1 with 5-1 Victory over No. 6 Rollins

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2-ranked University of West Florida men’s tennis team (25-2) won NCAA South Regional #1 today with a 5-1 victory over No. 6-ranked Rollins. West Florida advances to the NCAA Championships to be played in Louisville, Ky., May 16-19th. It is the 12th time in school history that the Argos have advanced to at least the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships. UWF has won its last 16 matches.
It is the second time this season that the Argos have defeated Rollins. On March 21st, then No. 7-ranked UWF traveled to Winter Park and defeated then-No. 8 Rollins, 6-3. The Gulf South Conference Champion Argos are the No. 1-ranked team in the South Region, while Rollins is the No. 4 team in the South. Rollins’ season ends with a 17-9 record.
Over the past thee days, the Argos hosted NCAA South Regional #1 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus. Yesterday, West Florida defeated conference foe West Alabama, 5-0, in the regional semifinals. The Argos are 14-1 at the Carson Tennis Complex this season.
West Florida opened the match by sweeping doubles. The No. 17-ranked duo of Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) gave the Argos the 1-0 lead as they tallied an 8-3 victory over Bernado Barroso and Constantin Sturdza at the No. 2 position. Ferreira and Pozhidaev have won their last 12 matches. At the No. 3 line, Argonauts Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela) defeated Ari Davis and Jeff Morris, 8-3. Lue and Sano are now 20-5 this season in doubles. In the final doubles match to finish, the No. 2-ranked doubles tandem of Bruno Savi (Santana do Livramento, Brazil) and Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) defeated the No. 10-ranked duo of Jason Alabaster and Lucas Jovita, 8-6. Savi and Ducros are also the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the South Region.
In singles, Rollins was the first to get on the board, as No. 2-ranked Jovita defeated No. 9-ranked Ducros, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 1 position. The Argos went up 4-1 as No. 21-ranked Pozhidaev recorded a straight set, 6-0, 6-2, victory over No. 43 Malte Christesen at No. 3. West Florida won the match when Sano defeated Alabaster, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6. Once the overall victory was clinched, all remaining matches were halted.
West Florida advances to the NCAA Championships, which will be played in Louisville, Ky., May 16-19th. Round of 16 matches will be played on May 16th. West Florida will face the winner of the Central Regional #2. Nebraska-Kearney and Metro State play tomorrow in the Central Regional #2 finals.
