Argos Hold Steady at No. 9 in the Nation
Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley Climb to No. 16 in the Nation

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The back-to-back Gulf South Champion University of West Florida women’s tennis team (22-6) held steady at No. 9 in the latest national edition of the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced today. In addition, Barbara Oliveira is listed as the No. 34 player in singles and the duo of Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley jumped two spots to No. 16 in the nation.
West Florida continues to hold on to the No. 9 spot. The Argos have been ranked No. 9 in the nation since March 28th. UWF’s highest team ranking this season has been No. 8. West Florida has compiled a 22-6 record so far this season and captured its 12th Gulf South Conference championship this season. West Florida will face No. 4-ranked Lynn tomorrow in the NCAA South Regional finals in Boca Raton, Fla. The Argos are the No. 3-ranked team in the South Region.
UWF senior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) represents the Argos in the top 50 singles players. Oliveira, who is the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, is 9-9 overall this season. Today, she clinched UWF’s victory in the South Regional semifinals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over No. 39 Magda Riutort of Florida Southern. Oliveira has been ranked as high as No. 14 this season. She is also ranked as the No. 11 singles player in the South Region.
Argonauts Caitlyn Baines (Ft. Walton Beach) and Sheila Smiley (Richmond Hill, Ontario) climbed two spots to No. 16 in the nation. The ITA rankings the top 25 doubles teams in the nation. Baines and Smiley are 17-4 overall, with all matches being played at the No. 1 doubles position. No. 16 is the highest ranking for the duo this season. The duo is the No. 6 doubles team in the South Region.
UWF, which is the No. 3 seed in the South Region, will face No. 2-seeded and No. 4-ranked Lynn tomorrow morning in the finals of NCAA South Regional #2.
