UWF, Rodriguez Finish 14th at NCAA Men's Golf Regional
Argos’ Season Comes to an End

CONOVER, N.C. – The West Florida men’s golf team came up short in its bid to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships after a 14th place finish at the South/Southeast Regional hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday. The Argonauts (298-293-300 - 891) finished the tournament 27-over par, while senior Carlos Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia/Austin Peay) finished his final college tournament in 14th place individually.
No. 16 Georgia College (291-289-289 - 860) held on to its lead to win the team title at 5-over par, while No. 1 Barry (295-289-286 - 870) was just one stroke back at 6-over par to place second. No. 2 Nova Southeastern (298-297-277 - 872) posted a 277 on the final day to surge into third place and earn a bid to the national championships. No. 8 UNC Pembroke (296-288-292 - 876) and No. 13 USC Aiken (294-290-296 - 880) took the final two bids to the national tournament by placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Matt Atkins (70-70-70 - 210) of USC Aiken won the individual title at 6-under par, while four players tied for second at 5-under. J.P. Griffin (68-72-71 - 211) of Georgia Southwestern and Jeff Evanier (70-68-74 - 212) of Eckerd were the top finishing individuals on non-advancing teams, and they will compete at the national tournament as individuals.

Fellow seniors Thomas Guste-Pedersen (Helle, Norway/Frank Phillips) and Ryan Black (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) finished 7-over and 8-over, respectively. Rodriguez was the GSC Player of the Year, and Black was just the third player in GSC men’s golf history to earn four all-conference nods.
Freshmen Adam Whipp (Sydney, Australia/Pittwater HS) and Juan Miguel Heredia (Cuenca, Ecuador/Jacksonville State) rounded out the Argos lineup at 12-over and 18-over, respectively. Whipp (71-76-81 - 228) had one of his best tournaments of the year at the regional, while Heredia (79-74-81 - 234), the GSC Freshman of the Year, had his tournament highlight on Tuesday with a 74.
The Argos’ season came to an end on Wednesday, but it was a season full of success. UWF won two tournaments and had three runner-up finishes, and Rodriguez tied a school record with three individual wins in a season. The Argos now boast 67 tournament titles all-time and 42 individual titles.
