Argos Season Comes to an End With 11-3 Loss to Delta State

TAMPA, Fla. – The West Florida baseball team’s season came to an end Saturday night with an 11-3 loss to Delta State in round three at the NCAA South Region Tournament. The Argonauts ended the year with a 35-19 overall record.
The Statesmen struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two run home run off the scoreboard in right field and plated the third run on a Michael Vinson double to right center. West Florida answered back in the top of the second inning tying the game at three. With two outs and the bases loaded Leo Lamarche (Miami, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan (Krop HS) drove in the first run of the inning on a base hit through the right side of the infield. The next batter Taye Larry (Panama City, Fla./Wallace State CC-Dothan (Mosley HS) ripped a two RBI double in left center field to knot the ball game at three.
Delta State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning but the Argos made the call to the bullpen and Scott Laughlin (Tallahassee, FL/Tallahassee CC (Chiles HS) got UWF out of the jam getting Ben Kingsley to ground into an inning ending double play. The Statesmen regained the lead, 7-3, in the bottom of the third inning on RBI hits by Brent Kakwitch and Johnathan Andrews while taking advantage of two West Florida errors. DSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, 8-3, on a Laughlin wild pitch.
UWF threatened in the top of the seventh inning loading the bases with one away but after a DSU pitching change James Hudelson was able to get UWF to ground into the inning ending double play. The Statesmen added three more runs to their lead, 11-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning on RBI hits by Kakwitch and Andrews. The Argos were unable to rally back as they fell to DSU 11-3, eliminating UWF from the NCAA South Region Tournament.
Jake Stephens (Marietta, Ga./Northwest Florida State College (Lassiter HS) received the loss for UWF allowing three runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings of work. Laughlin followed out of the bullpen and allowed five runs on five hits through three innings. Ben Bridges (Cartersville, Ga./Nortwest Florida State College (Cartersville HS) threw next for West Florida allowing two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. Jordan Delorenzo (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) followed on the mound allowing a run on two hits in 0.1 innings of work while Brian Ellington (Gainesville, Fla./Florida State College at Jacksonville (Oak Hall HS) tossed a perfect eighth fanning two batters. Delta States Aaron Newcomb picked up the win allowing three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Offensively the Argos were led by Larry and Lamarche. Larry was 2-3 with two RBIs and a walk while Lamarche was 3-4 with a run and a RBI.
