2012 West Florida Volleyball Schedule Announced
Five-Time Running National Champs Concordia-St. Paul and Perennial Contender Tampa Highlight the Calendar
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team officially released its calendar for the 2012 campaign as the Argonauts begin their quest for a fifth straight Gulf South Conference championship on Aug. 31.
UWF kicks off the schedule with a bang, taking on three out of the top five teams from last year’s final standings including five time running National Champs Concordia-St. Paul on Sept. 7, in Denver, Colo.
The year starts on Aug. 31, for head coach Melissa Wolter’s squad as West Florida hosts Lock Haven followed by Central Missouri on opening day. Sept. 1, will bring in Indianapolis and perennial south region foe Tampa before the Argos head to Denver, Colo. on Sept. 7.
After taking on Concordia-St. Paul, Lewis will await the Argos with two more games on Sept. 8, before the team heads home for the GSC opener against West Georgia on Sept. 14.
Conference newcomer Shorter will make its first ever appearance in the UWF Field House on Sept.15, and Alabama-Huntsville will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday match on Sept. 16.
The Argos then hit the road for 12 out of their next 13 games starting with a three match weekend beginning in Memphis, Tenn. with Christian Brothers on Sept. 21, Union in Jackson, Tenn. on Sept. 22, and North Alabama in Florence, Ala. on Sept. 23.
West Florida will play one on Sept. 28, in Livingston, Ala. against West Alabama before taking a brief respite from the road with a home game on Oct. 4, against Valdosta State.
Eight straight away games in the following two weeks await the Argos including a four game crossover in Tampa, Fla. where UWF will face regional opponents Florida Southern, Eckerd, Rollins and Tampa once again on Oct. 19-20.
The Argos will return to their home court on Oct. 26, as they host Christian Brothers followed by the Pack it Pink match with Union on Oct. 27, and North Alabama on Oct. 28. Nov. 3, will be the final regular season home match for UWF against West Alabama on Senior Night.
Wrapping up the regular season for the Argos will be away matches at Valdosta on Nov.6, and a pair of games in Montevallo, Ala. on Nov. 10 against UNC-Pembroke and Montevallo.
The GSC Tournament, which the Argos have taken the last four years, will be held on Nov. 15-17, with the regular season champ hosting the three day event.
This year’s NCAA South Regionals will take place on Nov. 29-Dec. 1, with the top seeded team hosting.
Pensacola, Fla. will then be the site of this year’s NCAA Finals held in the UWF Field House on Dec. 6-8.
The Argos finished 2011 with a 25-9 overall record and an undefeated, 14-0 mark in conference play.
