DENVER – A phenomenal showing by the West Florida volleyball team gave them a 2-0 start at the Colorado Premier Challenge Friday at the Auraria Event Center in Denver, Colo. The Argonauts started the tournament with a big upset of No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul and followed up with a defeat of No. 17 Lewis, both coming in four sets. The victory against Concordia-St. Paul, known as a volleyball powerhouse, is  the first in the history of UWF’s program.

West Florida (3-3) automatically won Pool One of the tournament with the victories and will advance to tomorrow morning’s match against West Texas A&M in the Gold Bracket, who also won both its matches in Pool Four. If the Argonauts win the morning match, they will advance to the championship match of one of the most prestigious tournaments in college volleyball.

West Florida def. No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul 14-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18

A sizeable loss in the first set to the No. 1 team in the nation did not phase the Argonauts, who won three frames straight to upset Concordia-St. Paul 3-1. Lindsay Homme (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) led the offense with 13 kills at a scorching .500 rate while Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) had an almost identical 12 kills with a .550 clip. Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) had 29 assists and three Argonauts contributed six digs apiece.

UWF fell back four points early in the first set and was unable to regroup against an unstoppable Golden Bears (4-1) offense, which hit .577 on the way to a 25-14 win. After making a few adjustments to the offense at the start of the second set, the Argonauts jumped out to a huge 10-3 advantage with a .385 clip and never relinquished it to even the match one set each 25-20.

The Argonauts seized the lead again in the third set and only gave it back once at the 21-21 mark despite seven ties. A 4-1 run, which included a kill by Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) and a Colleen Starrs (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) service ace, shut down Concordia-St. Paul 25-22.

The Golden Bears quickly built a 10-5 lead in the third set which West Florida was forced to slowly chip away at. Shackelford caught fire and smashed four straight kills sparked by a service ace from Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS), the fuel for a 15-6 spree that put UWF ahead 20-16. Multiple attack errors sealed Concordia-St. Paul’s fate as UWF only allowed two more points in the 25-18 victory to earn the upset.

West Florida def. No. 17 Lewis 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20

The offense was strong from start to finish in their second match of the day as four Argonauts hit double-digits in kills. Shackelford and Duyn both had double-doubles, 13 kills and 11 digs and 10 kills and 15 digs, respectively. Homme led all players with 21 kills, and Hansen provided 44 assists while Starrs had 17 digs.

Five ties and four lead changes occurred during the first half of the first frame, with the last coming during a five point spree that put West Florida firmly in control for the remainder of the set. The Argonauts claimed the set on a final three point run that included two kills by Shackelford, the final 25-19.

Despite the Argonauts not allowing the Flyers (3-2) to grab more than a three point advantage the entire game, they came back to even the match up after taking the second set 25-21. UWF was scorching hot in the next frame, and dominated offensively by hitting a match-high .400 clip to Lewis’ .176 to take the set 25-15.

A back-and-forth start in the final set gave way to West Florida after a service ace and three kills by Scott, Shackelford and Homme. The Argonauts did not allow the Flyers to score more than two points back-to-back, and a final timeout at set point only stalled the match for one more point before a kill by Duyn gave UWF its second upset over  a nationally ranked team in one day.

UWF hits the court tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. MT against West Texas A&M. Depending on the outcome of the match, it will face either the winner of the Pool Two and Three match at 7:00 p.m. MT or the loser at 5:00 p.m. MT. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
