PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a challenging week, the West Florida men’s soccer team responded with a strong performance in a 2-1 win over Florida Southern at Brosnaham Park on Sunday. The win was the team’s first of the season, as the Argonauts improved to 1-2. Florida Southern fell to 0-3-1 with the loss.
The match was a defensive battle, as the two teams combined for just 14 total shots. A lapse on defense proved to be the cause of the first goal, however, as Florida Southern scored an own goal to break the scoreless tie at the 30:09 mark. The Moccasins took a free kick from midfield, and the ball deflected off an Argonaut and into the back of the net to put Florida Southern up by one.
The Argos responded seven minutes later with a goal on one of their 15 corner kicks in the match. Frank Cope (Mobile, Ala.) lofted the ball into the penalty area from the left corner, and Richard Dixon (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) bolted in and blasted a header into the net to tie the game.
The score remained tied through much of the second half, as the teams continued to have trouble finding scoring opportunities. The Argos broke through in the 78th minute, as Lucas Williams (Tallahassee, Fla.) found Jack Salafrio (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) open on a through ball, and Salafrio converted the breakaway chance to put UWF ahead 2-1.
The Argos will take their newfound momentum into the 2012 Gulf South Conference opener, as the team travels to face GSC newcomer Union University (Tenn.) on Friday, Sept. 14. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
