JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 7 West Florida women’s soccer team started their quest to retake the top spot in the Gulf South Conference on Friday, defeating Union University (Tenn.) 2-0 in their 2012 GSC opener. The Argonauts dominated GSC newcomer Union, outshooting the Bulldogs 22-4 on their way to victory.
The Argonauts (5-0, 1-0 GSC)) kept the pressure on Union’s (2-2, 0-1 GSC) back line the entire first half, tallying 13 shots compared to just one for the Bulldogs. Union goalkeeper Emily Waggoner kept the Argos at bay for much of the first half, but Sashana Campbell (Manchester, Jamaica) put UWF on top with a surprise goal as time expired to end the opening period.
UWF added to the one-goal lead early in the second half, as defender Rachel Cutts (Pace, Fla.) tallied her second goal of the year on a free kick at the 53:27 mark.
That was all the Argos would need, as UWF cruised to a shutout victory. Union finished with four shots, just one on goal, as Sarah Story (Hoover, Ala.) made a save on the Bulldogs’ only shot on frame. Waggoner had a busy afternoon, tallying 11 saves for Union.
The Argos will take their undefeated record into Sunday’s match with GSC rival and No. 21 ranked North Alabama. UNA broke UWF’s string of three consecutive league titles in 2011. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
