PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men’s soccer team took down the top team in the conference for the second consecutive game with a 4-2 win over Delta State Sunday afternoon.

The Argonauts (3-2-1, 2-0-1 Gulf South Conference) knocked Christian Brothers off the top of the top of the standings with a 1-0 victory Friday night before knocking Delta State off (4-3-0, 2-1-0) Sunday.

DSU took the lead early when Steven Simmons scored on a free kick from 40 yards out with 11:41 on the clock. Simmons bent the ball into the back-left corner of the net for the score.

The Argos’ Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) responded exactly two minutes later with a goal of his own after driving past two defenders and past a diving keeper for the score.

Although the Argos dominated the shot count, the Statesmen responded when Daniel Deblaere dished a quick pass to Caue Da Silva who was waiting in the left side of the box and scored at the 27:54 mark.

But the Argos rallied before the half when Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) found James Moore (Manchester, England/Cumberlands) with a quick pass inside the box to set up a game-tying score.

UWF outshot DSU 24-5 in the first half, and 38-7 for the game. The Argos’ record for most shots in a game is 44 against Shorter in 1993.

The Argos went out aggressive in the second half and, Munoz worked the ball to the side of the box in the second half and then crossed a ball to Frank Cope (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright) who placed the ball in the net to put the Argos up 3-2 with 52:04 on the clock.

Cope got one more opportunity when Fernando Silveria (Brasilia, Brazil/Lincoln Memorial) launched a powerful shot that ricocheted off the cross bar and landed right in front of Cope’s feet. Cope took advantage of the opportunity for his second goal of the day at the 72:18 mark.

The Argos will take on Alabama-Huntsville on the road on Sept. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
