TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team finished sixth out of 16 teams at the Florida State Cross Country Invitational on Friday. The meet was hosted by Florida State University and was held at Apalachee Regional Park.

Sophomore Cody Haden continued his stellar sophomore campaign by crossing the finish line first for the Argonauts in his second-consecutive 8,000-meter race. Haden finished 29th overall (26:52.00) in a field of 162 runners.

“We ran against some of the top teams in our region today and we were right in the mix throughout the race,” head coach John Bergen said. “We finished well against our regional teams and had an overall good finish in a very strong field. I’m proud of the performances we had today.”

Senior Martinique Sykes crossed the finish line second for UWF and finished 33rd overall (26:56.40). Fellow senior Dominique Sykes finished 36th overall (27:00.20) and third for the Argonauts.

Sophomore Brandon Skeie set a personal-best time on an 8,000-meter course and finished 54th overall (27:34.10). Skeie set his previous personal-best time last season at this very meet as a freshman, and bettered his previous mark by seven seconds.

"It was nice to see Brandon run one of his best races of the year,” Bergen said. “I think this race is going to help him get into form the rest of the season.”

Freshman Sam Hippely rounded out the top-five finishers for UWF by placing 57th overall (27:39.40).

UWF will head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Chili Pepper Festival races next weekend before heading to Hoover, Ala. the following weekend for the Gulf South Conference Championships. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
