Bellairs, Shackelford lead UWF volleyball over Mobile

West Florida earns 11th win of the season over NAIA affiliate University of Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – Senior Jenny Bellairs (Osage, Iowa/Southeast Missouri State) had 14 kills and recorded a season-best attacking percentage (.571) to lead the No. 23 ranked University of West Florida volleyball team over the University of Mobile 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-11, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) accounted for 13 kills at a .308 rate in the win. Shackelford recorded four consecutive kills late in the first set as the Argonauts took the early lead. West Florida (11-6, 7-1 GSC) hit .387 in the first-set win. Mobile (15-8, 4-4 SSAC) tied the match at one set a piece after hitting .370 as a team in the second set.

UWF trailed early in the third set before going on a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead to force the Rams into a timeout. The Argonauts had the momentum and went on to take the third set 25-11 behind the defensive efforts of sophomore Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) and junior Abby Timmer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS). Scott recorded six blocks in the match while Timmer accounted for five.

UWF hit .400 in the fourth set take the match three sets to one. In a back and forth final set the score was tied at nine early on, but Bellairs took over and recorded six of her 14 kills in the final stanza to seal the match.

The Argonauts will have a three game road trip next weekend against Gulf South Conference opponents starting on Friday, Oct. 12 in Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
