ROME, Ga. – Despite a valiant charge by Shorter to prolong the match in the final set, the No. 23 West Florida volleyball team picked up its second Gulf South Conference series sweep this season with a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-16, 29-27) on the road Saturday afternoon in the Winthrop-King Centre.
Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) and Lindsay Homme (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) led the charge with 17 and 16 kills apiece at .516 and .389 clips, respectively. Shackelford also picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 10 digs, while Christine Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida State College at Jacksonville) led the defense with 14 digs. Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) had 26 assists.
The Argonauts (13-6, 9-1 GSC) took complete control of the first set with a 5-0 run that included three straight kills by Homme and Bach to double their advantage 14-7, each team trading points from then until UWF won 25-17 on a ball handling error. A 9-1 spree out of the gate of the second frame allowed West Florida to coast to a 25-16 victory.
The final set was the most closely contested, with the Argonauts only holding as much as a four point advantage midway through. The Lady Hawks fought off match point twice and had two set points of their own, but UWF went to Shackelford for the final two kills to take the set and match 29-27.
Shorter (13-4, 6-3 GSC) was led by Anna Graham and Jasmine Crook on the offense with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jordan Corder had 33 assists and Loren Olive had 13 digs.
West Florida wraps up its three match GSC road trip tomorrow against Alabama-Huntsville at 1:00 p.m CT. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
