FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team finished 25th out of 34 teams at the Chili Peppers Cross Country Festival on Saturday. The meet was hosted by the University of Arkansas and was held at Agri Park.
Senior Martinique Sykes led the way for the Argonauts finishing 135th (33:24.70) out of 313 runners on the 10,000-meter course. Sykes missed his personal-best time by just nine seconds and was the first Argonaut across the finish line.
“We were very pleased with the team’s performance today,” head coach John Bergen said. “This was a great opportunity for us to have a chance to run a 10k before (NCAA DII South Regional). I think the best thing about this race was that we ran very strong in the second half of the race; that’s a tribute to the training that our student-athletes have put in this year.”
Sophomore Cody Haden finished second for UWF and set a personal-best time. Last season Haden ran his first collegiate 10,000-meter race at the NCAA South Regional in Tampa, Fla. in just under 35 minutes. Today, Haden shaved over 65 seconds off his previous time and finished 162nd overall (33:51.90) in his first 10,000-meter race of the 2012 season.
Sophomore Brandon Skeie also set a personal-best time in his second 10,000-meter race of his career as an Argonaut. Skeie bettered his previous time by more than 21 seconds en route to a 184th place overall finish.
Freshman David Drumm crossed the finish line fourth for the Argonauts in just his first collegiate 10,000-meter race and 194th overall (34:19.70). Senior Dominique Sykes finished fifth for UWF and 197th overall (34:21.60).
“We were also extremely pleased with the four freshmen that ran today,” Bergen said. “They were running their first collegiate 10,000-meter race today and ran really strong races.”
The UWF men’s cross country team will head to Hoover, Ala. next weekend to compete in the Gulf South Conference Championships. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
