HOOVER, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team finished third at the 2012 GSC Championships with a team score of 54. UWF had five runners earn All-GSC honors for placing amongst the top-20 finishers including three All-GSC First Team selections.

Senior Martinique Sykes finished third overall (26:34.60) and first for UWF on the 8,000-meter course and earns his second-consecutive All-GSC First team selection. Fellow senior Dominique Sykes earned his third consecutive All-GSC honor after finishing third for UWF. His eighth-place overall finish (27:06.80) makes him a two-time All-GSC First Team honors.

“It was good to see Dominique run so well today,” head coach John Bergen said. “He has been dealing with injuries all season and to see him perform so well today was great.”

Sophomore Cody Haden finished seventh overall (26:58.20) and now has earned All-GSC honors in his first two seasons as an Argonaut. Haden earned All-GSC Second Team honors last season as a freshman after finishing 18th overall. This season, Haden has been a mainstay for the Argonauts, and has never finished outside of the top two finishers for UWF.

Sophomore Brandon Skeie chose to save documenting his season-best performance on an 8,000-meter course for the post season, and shaved over four seconds off his time en route to a 17th-place finish (27:29.30). Skeie earns his first All-GSC Second-Team honor for his efforts on the day.

Freshman Sam Hippely rounded out the top five finishers for UWF on the day by finishing 20th overall (27:46.00). Hippely earns All-GSC Second Team honors in his first conference meet as an Argonaut.

“Sam really stepped it up today,” Bergen said. “It was great to see him earn all-conference accolades as a freshman. He has really stepped it up here towards the end of the season.”
