LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Forward Sashana Campbell (Manchester, Jamaica/Darton) and goalkeeper Sarah Story (Hoover, Ala./Darton) led the No. 4 West Florida women’s soccer team to a 3-0 win at West Alabama on Sunday, clinching the top seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament. Campbell scored a goal and an assist, and Story made five saves in her fourth straight shutout.
The win improved UWF’s record to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in GSC play. With just one more conference game left in the regular season, the Argos clinched the top spot in the league standings ahead of second place Valdosta State (11-2-2, 4-1-1 GSC).
Campbell put the Argos on top in the first half with a goal in the 14th minute. She received a pass from Shelby Bush (Shalimar, Fla./Darton) down the middle, and then she dribbled past the keeper and scored on an open net. The goal was Campbell’s seventh of the season, and five have been game-winners.
UWF kept pressuring the West Alabama (6-7-3, 4-2-1 GSC) defense in the second half, eventually scoring a second goal in the 68th minute. Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) sent a cross into the box from the right side, and freshman Brittanie Hensley (Enterprise, Ala./Enterprise HS) volleyed it in for her first career goal. The Argos put it out of reach in the 76th minute on a goal by Shanice Monteith (George Town, Cayman Islands/University College), who was assisted by Campbell.
Story had five saves in one of her best games of the season to preserve the shutout, and several of her saves were highlight reel stops. The shutout was her eighth of the season, and she now holds a goals against average of 0.64 and a save percentage of .855.
UWF finished the match with a 14-8 shot advantage, and they were also awarded 10 corner kicks to their opponents’ three.
The Argos will finish the regular season next weekend with a pair of road games, first facing West Georgia in non-conference action on Friday, Oct. 26 and then Valdosta State on Sunday, Oct. 28. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
