CARROLTON, Ga. – The No. 3 West Florida women’s soccer team defeated West Georgia 4-0 for the second time this season as the Argonauts (16-1-0) recorded their fifth consecutive victory of the season and extended their winning streak to 7 games going into the final game of the regular season.
Four different players scored goals and two players had an assist as the Argo defense kept the ball away from keeper Sarah Story (Hoover, Ala./Darton) for the majority of the game. Story recorded her fifth consecutive shutout and ninth of the season without recording a save.
Friday’s match was a nonconference affair. UWF defeated UWG (5-9-3) earlier this season in a Gulf South Conference match on Oct. 14 in Pensacola.
Just 11 minutes into the game, Alex Pickrell (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) got the ball outside the corner of the UWG box and sent a high shot toward the goal that bent down just over the hands of a leaping Wolves keeper and into the far corner of the net.
The goal was the first of the season for Pickrell and put UWF up 1-0 at the 11:20 mark.
Senior Tori Fish (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire HS), who has started 56 consecutive games for the Argos, got the ball off of a ricochet later in the half. Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) sent a header toward the goal that was deflected by a defender and landed in front of Fish who scored her second goal of the season at the 40:41 mark.
In the second half, Shanice Monteith (George Town, Cayman Islands/University College) sent a long pass to Daniela Cruz (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) at the side of the box who crossed it to Sashana Campbell (Manchester, Jamaica/Darton) at the middle of the box who scored her eighth goal of the season with 77:07 on the clock.
Then, in the final ten minutes of the game, Cruz was racing for a ball near the side of the UWG box when she was fouled. Senior Jessica Ebanks (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands/University College) took the penalty kick and scored her second goal of the season and second of her career at the 81:46 mark.
UWF outshot UWG 21-6. The Argos will play Valdosta State in their final game of the regular season in a GSC match Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
UWF has clinched the No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament which begins on Nov. 1 at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
