PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the second straight match the No. 20 West Florida volleyball team held their opponent to minimal offensive firepower to coast to a 3-0 sweep against Union and a victory for the annual “Pack it Pink” match Saturday.
Proceeding and during the match, fans were able to bid on silent auction items donated by UWF athletic teams and various community members to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Donations were also accepted in lieu of ticket prices, of which $261.85 was raised. The West Florida women’s golf team was also recognized for donating $2,000 to the cause. The total amount of money raised, which will be determined Sunday following the close of the silent auction at the conclusion of the North Alabama match, will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation.
The Argonauts (19-7, 12-1 GSC) held their second straight Gulf South Conference opponent to a .000 hitting percentage after doing the same against Christian Brothers Friday evening. Christine Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida State College at Jacksonville) led the UWF offense with a career-high tying 13 kills at a .417 rate along with 10 digs for her first career double-double.
Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) also had double-digit kills with 12. K.C. Dobbins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Arkansas) collected a match-high 21 assists and Colleen Starrs (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) led the defense with 14 digs.
West Florida rattled off three straight kills by Duyn and Sarah Hughey (Clemson, S.C./D.W. Daniel HS) to pad the lead 16-10 in the first set and maintained the advantage to win the set 25-18. The Bulldogs (4-20, 1-10 GSC) hung tough in the second set and tied up the score 20-20 despite being behind by as much as five points, but UWF scored the final five points-straight to claim the frame 25-20.
After the Argonauts took another early lead 7-4 in the final game, Union responded with a 7-0 spree to grab just its second lead of the match 11-7. West Florida was not phased, however, and tied up the match during a 6-0 run to recapture the advantage 17-15. UWF only allowed three more points by the Bulldogs to secure the match 25-18.
West Florida wraps up the three-match weekend Sunday when it hosts GSC archrival North Alabama at 1 p.m. in the UWF Fieldhouse. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
