Fish named GSC Player of the Week
Fifth-year senior earns first POW nod in the final week of the regular season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Fifth-year senior Tori Fish (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire HS) was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week in the final week of the regular season after recording three goals in two matches against GSC opponents on the road for the No. 3 West Florida women’s soccer team.
Fish, a co-captain, has started 57 consecutive matches for the Argonauts and has played every game since the beginning of the 2010 season. She has the most minutes played at midfield this season and the fourth-most minutes played on the team.
The Argo scored the second goal of the game against West Georgia on Oct. 26 with a shot in the box at the 40:41 mark.
Two days later against the GSC’s No. 2 defense Valdosta State (UWF is No. 1 in goals allowed per game), Fish got the scoring started with a goal at the 35:18 mark to break a scoreless tie in a defensive battle. The score remained the same until the 86:10 mark when Fish added insurance with header into the back of the net to put UWF up 2-0.
Fish scored a goal in the first game of the season, and then added three more goals in the regular season’s final two matches.
She is the third Argo to earn the award this season. Shelby Bush (Shalimar, Fla./Darton) was named the player of the week earlier in the season and Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) has earned the honor twice.
The Argos will be the No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament beginning on Thursday with quarterfinal matches at Ashton Brosnaham Park. UWF will receive a first-round bye and play the winner of West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville in a semifinal match Friday.
