PENSACOLA, Fla. – After falling behind by 16 points in the second half, the West Florida men’s basketball team came back to defeat Tuskegee 89-84 in overtime in Saturday’s final game of the McDonald Fleming Moorhead Thanksgiving Classic at the UWF Field House. Five Argonauts scored in double digits in the win, including Ellis Young III (Merritt Island, Fla./Brevard CC) and Tracy Williams (Cocoa, Fla./Clayton State) with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
With the win the Argonauts improved to 5-0, marking the second best start in UWF men’s basketball history. The most consecutive wins to start a season for UWF is nine, set at the beginning of the 1997-98 season.
Young was a big factor on both sides of the ball, scoring 22 points on offense while blocking six shots and grabbing four steals on defense. Young was also 12-13 from the free throw line. Williams scored 14 of his 20 points at the free throw line, and 11 of those free throws came in overtime. Williams also chipped in with a team-high nine rebounds and seven steals. Sean Voss (Belton, Texas/Belton HS) had the best scoring output of his career, tallying 17 points.
UWF started well and took a four-point lead on a layup by Nate Johnson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Saint Leo) with 11:55 left in the first half. The Argos then went scoreless over the next six minutes, allowing the Golden Tigers to take a 33-20 lead at the 6:35 mark. Tuskegee held the lead into the break, leading 40-29 at halftime.
The comeback effort in the second half started slow, but UWF kept chipping away at the Golden Tigers’ lead. Young scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the second period, and he also had four of his six blocked shots in that time frame.
The Argos’ run started on a three-pointer by Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) with 5:34 on the clock, propelling UWF to outscore Tuskegee 11-2 over the next four minutes. A hard-fought basket by Voss at the 1:01 mark narrowed Tuskegee’s lead to one at 69-68, and the Argos defense held strong to keep the Golden Tigers’ off the scoreboard the rest of the period. Williams made one of two free throws to tie the game with 25 seconds left, and Tuskegee then missed a buzzer beater, sending the game into overtime.
Tuskegee scored the first points of the overtime period, but Johnson quickly put UWF on top 73-71 with 2:44 left to go. The lead was the first for the Argonauts since the 10:49 mark in the first half. UWF pulled away later in the period thanks to a technical foul, and Williams went on to make seven in a row and 11-12 at the charity stripe to clinch the win.
The Argos will open Gulf South Conference play next weekend, taking to the road to face North Alabama on Nov. 29 and Union (Tenn.) on Dec. 1. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
