PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida softball team split a doubleheader with former Gulf South Conference member Southern Arkansas Sunday at the UWF Softball Complex. The Argonauts (3-1) fell in the first game 4-1 before coming alive with a 10-1 run-rule victory in the final contest of the weekend.

“We had a good weekend,” head coach Tami Cyr said. “Obviously we wanted to go 4-0, but all-in-all it was a great weekend. We brought it back after that first game and the bats came alive. We were able to get some people in the game that contributed which was very exciting for the whole team to see that.”

Game One Box Score

A combination of silent bats and Southern Arkansas (3-4) capitalizing on opportunities caused West Florida’s first loss of the young season as only four Argonauts managed a hit. Aubrey Sumlin (Gulf Shores, Ala./Gulf Shores HS) drove in the lone RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Kenny Craig (Petersburg, Mich./Owens Community College) who pinch ran for Elizabeth Nugent (Ruskin, Fla./East Bay HS) after she blasted one of UWF’s two extra base hits for the game, a double.

The fifth inning was the only one to see runners cross home plate, as UWF’s score came in response to the Muleriders’ four runs in the top of the inning. A back-to-back sacrifice fly and fielder’s choice put the first two runs on the board, followed by an RBI single and throwing error to complete Southern Arkansas’ offensive output.

Jordan Ratliff (Petersburg, Mich./Owens CC) suffered her first defeat in the circle after striking out four batters and allowing hits and no walks in the complete game effort.

Game Two Box Score

The Argonauts bounced back big in the night cap, outhitting the Muleriders 14 to 4 as three different Argos had at least two hits. Kasie Buckley (Little Rock, Miss./East Central CC) went 4-for-4 to plate one RBI and two runs, including the first of the game after Sumlin drove her and Bianca Lopez Stuttgart, (Germany/Patch American HS) home with her only hit of the game. Sumlin, who also scored two runs, gave UWF a 3-0 lead after crossing home plate to cap the second inning.

After scoring off a two-RBI single by Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) the next inning, West Florida added another three runs in the fourth frame by loading the bases on no outs and utilizing another two-RBI single and an attempted double steal that saw Danielle Sanders (Leesburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College) reach home safely.

Sanders also provided the final run needed to secure the mercy rule victory after nailing a double in the sixth inning to reach base. Alex Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach HS) and Buckley followed with back-to-back doubles of their own to tack on another insurance run.

Taylor Bailey (Austin, Texas/University of Louisiana at Monroe) threw another strong game for the Argonauts and moved to 2-0 after tossing five strikeouts and no walks in six innings of action.

West Florida heads south to the Eckerd College Invitational next Friday where they will face five South Region opponents in three days. For information on all UWF athletics, visit
