Argonauts earn two wins in day one of the EC Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team earned two wins in the first day of competition at the EC Triton Invitational on Friday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. West Florida defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 6-2 before defeating Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern 2-1. Junior Danielle Sanders went 6-for-8 on the day with four stolen bases, three runs scored and game-winning diving catch in left field.

Game One Box

In game one West Florida came out ready to hit from the beginning, scoring three runs off three hits in the top of the first inning. Kasie Buckley started things off for the Argos with an RBI single to right field to bring in Danielle Sanders. Lauren Correia laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in the second run of the game before Jenna Belser hit an RBI double to left field to extend the lead to three runs.

Palm Beach Atlantic would respond in the second inning with a run to cut the lead to two before back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth. In the bottom of the fifth inning PBA struck again to cut the lead to one run.

With a 3-2 lead Hannah Dowling singled to second base before Buckley hit the teams’ first homerun of the season to extend the lead to three runs and seal the win.

Senior Jordan Ratliff earned the win in the game after going more than four innings in game one. Sophomore Taylor Bailey appeared in relief for Ratliff and struck out three batters to close out the win.

Game Two Box

In game two the Argonauts got another incredible performance from Bailey. The Austin, Texas native struck out nine batters and gave up only five hits in her third career start for the Argonauts. This is the third-consecutive start that Bailey has earned a complete-game win for UWF. Bailey has not allowed an earned run in any appearance in the circle so far this season.

West Florida got things started again in the first inning with a RBI single from Belser down the left field line from that brought in Sanders. Sanders had three hits, two stolen bases and a run in the win.

A scoreless stretch of innings put the Argonauts up one run in the top of the seventh. The Moccasins got a runner on second after a UWF fielding error to start the seventh inning, but Bailey was able to retire back-to-back batters before giving up the unearned tying run.

UWF responded in the bottom of the seventh as Sanders doubled down the left field line. Audrey Harner singled up the middle but Sanders was caught out at home. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Dowling hit a game-winning RBI single up the middle to bring in Harner and seal the win.

West Florida will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Florida Tech and 1:30 p.m. against Tampa. Live stats and audio will be available on GoArgos.com.
