UWF soccer duo to play professionally for VSI Tampa Bay FC
Dixon and Reynolds to defend for Tampa Bay in its inaugural season
TAMPA, Fla. – Former West Florida men’s soccer players Richard Dixon and Sean Reynolds have signed with United Soccer Leagues Pro team VSI Tampa Bay FC. The Argonaut standouts will play for Tampa Bay in its inaugural season.
Dixon is a two-time Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and four-time all-region selection while leading the Argos to GSC championships in 2009 and 2010 and a regular-season championship in 2012.
"I am really pleased to be signing a player of his potential,” said Tampa Bay head coach Matt Weston. “Richard's a player destined to not only be in the roster, but to also earn a starting spot with this team. I was excited to see a guy of his quality at the invitational tryouts.
"As a player with good technical ability and athleticism, he really suites the system that VSI Tampa Bay FC will be playing this season."
Reynolds, who played for UWF from 2008-11, will join Dixon as a defender for Tampa Bay. While at UWF, Reynolds was a four-time GSC Defender of the Week and was the first player in GSC history to be named Defender of the Week and Player of the Week in the same week.
The 2011 GSC Player of the Year, Reynolds was named to the All-GSC First Team twice and to the Daktronics All-Region team twice.
“Sean is a player we have paid close attention too for a while,” Weston said. “He is a great lad, who is very coachable and we feel has so much room to develop as a player with VSI Tampa Bay F.C. He has all the physical tools to play at this level.
“We as a club are excited to see him blossom as a player both technically and tactically to suit our brand of soccer. Sean is a pleasure to coach, and I'm personally delighted he has decided to join us here at VSI."
Reynolds and Dixon join Keith Savage as three former Argos who are playing soccer professionally. Savage plays for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the in the North American Soccer League.
“They’re all very talented,” UWF coach Bill Elliott said. “As their coach, I look forward to following them. I hope one or all of them can replicate the success at that level and be a big part of their team as it competes.”
Tampa Bay will open the season April 13 vs. the Rochester Rhinos in Tampa.
