PENSACOLA, Fla. - Following a four game road trip, during which the Argonauts were 4-0, 17th-ranked West Florida extended its winning streak to six-straight matches following their 4-0 victory over Eckerd College Friday night at the UWF Soccer Complex. Jimmy McHenry picked up a pair of goals and a pair of assists in the Argonauts first home match since they defeated Georgia Southwestern on Aug. 26.
West Florida struck quickly in the match cracking the scoreboard at the 9:14 mark of the first half, when Jay Mainville picked up his second goal of the season on a pair of passes from McHenry and Rafael Segal. Mainville received the ball inside the box and finished with his left foot.
The Argonauts furthered the score in the 30th minute of the first half when Mainville returned the favor by setting up McHenry for a shot from outside the 18-yard box, which the senior forward buried in the upper 90, giving West Florida a 2-0 half time lead.
Just six minutes into the second half it was McHenry once again that burned the Tritons defense, scoring his team-leading seventh goal of the season. This time he received a long pass from Segal, over the top of Eckerd's back line, leaving the striker with a one-on-one opportunity against the Tritons keeper.
The Argonauts added the fourth and final goal of the game in the 57th minute when Keith Savage picked up a swift cross from McHenry, dribbled one defender and put away his fifth goal of the season.
Juan Garcia earned the shut out, his second of the season, by stopping all six shots that came his way. The six saves gives Garcia a Gulf South Conference high 38 saves on the season. The Argonauts also lead the GSC in goals (24), points (70), and goals per match (a 3.43 average).
We win also gives the Argonauts a season sweep against Sunshine State Conference opponents this season, ending with a 5-0 record against their South Region rivals.
"We knew Eckerd was a tough team coming into the match," said head coach Bill Elliott. "We just had to remain focused, be patient, and make good passes to come out on top, which we did."
Up next for the Argonauts is an away match against Concordia (Ga.) on Sunday with kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can follow the action with "Live Stats" on the Men's Soccer page at goargos.com.
