PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argos completed the second and final day of the Comfort Inn-vitational as the only team to finish 4-0 over the two days. No. 23 West Florida upset No. 16 Indianapolis in the final match of the tournament after also beating GSC opponent Henderson State earlier in the afternoon.
West Florida volleyball began day two of the Comfort Inn-vitational with a 3-0 defeat of Henderson State. The Argos won three straight sets (25-8, 25-16, 25-16) over the Lady Reddies, controlling much of the match that lasted just over an hour. Patricia Gandolfo (Porto Alegre Brazil/ Missouri State-West Plains CC) led UWF, hitting .625 and totaling 11 kills throughout the match.
In set one, West Florida jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to set the pace for the entire match. Gandolfo was responsible for three of those points, while attacks errors from Henderson State added the other two. The Argos held the lead through the entire set, with Chelsea Wilhoite (Jacksonville, Fla./ Bishop Kenny HS) making four kills and Madeline Gonzalez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/ Hillsborough CC) providing eight assists.
The Argos began set two in a battle with the Reddies, but regained momentum with a nine point scoring spree to increase their lead to 16-8. Gandolfo again finished the set with four kills, as well as two service aces. Kara Gonzalez (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine HS) and Madeline Gonzalez both added three kills to the win, while Jesse Keroack (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside HS) stepped in to provide seven assists.
The third set brought trouble for the Argos, but they emerged unscathed to complete the victory in three sets. The beginning looked to be domination for the Argonauts as they got an early 4-0 lead, but the Reddies would again close in on the UWF lead. After several Argo errors, Henderson State came within one point of the lead at 11-10.
West Florida pulled off an incredible win in a final, exhausting match of the tournament over the University of Indianapolis, 3-1. Senior Madeline Gonzalez led with 56 assists, while three West Florida players had double-digit kills including Luciana Rapach (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC), Gandolfo, and Wilhoite.
West Florida won the first set, 25-21, but dropped the second set, 20-25. The third set was back and forth between both teams, as the score stayed close until the last few points when West Florida took control late in the set to win 25-19. The fourth and final set went down to the wire, with West Florida edging the win 28-26 over the Hounds to complete the Comfort Inn-vitational. "I'm pleased with our performance, said Head Coach Melissa Wolter. "Multiple players step up when they needed to, and we learned a lot about ourselves when playing a scrappy match."
Immediately following the final matches, West Florida announced the 2008 Comfort Inn-itational All-Tournament team which included three West Florida players. The team was voted on by all coaches from all ten teams.
