TAMPA, Fla. – In the exhibition game to open the 2008-09 men’s basketball season on Tuesday, West Florida fell to Division I South Florida 80-41 at the Sun Dome in Tampa. Senior guard Chris Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./S.C. Aiken) led the Argonauts on the night with 10 points off the bench.
Brown totaled 10 points with two three-pointers and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Junior forward Darryl McGhee (Defuniak Springs, Fla./Gulf Coast CC) scored eight in just 10 minutes on the court, shooting 4-6 from the field and grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
Senior center Charles Bouie (Pahokee, Fla./Indian River CC) and senior guard Ryan Henry (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Roane State CC) also had a solid first game offensively, each adding seven points. Bouie also tallied two blocks and three steals on defense.
The Argonauts shot 31.8 percent from the field (14-44), starting strong in the first half (45 percent, 9-20) and tailing off in the second (20.8 percent, 5-24). The Bulls fared better from the field (51.7 percent), but UWF had the better night at the charity stripe, shooting 10-14 compared to 11-20 from USF.
Dominique Jones starred for the Bulls, scoring a game-high 26 points with nine assists. Eladio Espinosa (11) and Jesus Verdejo (14) also reach double-digit point totals.
